Objective
Ladybird Pre-School Nursery Sleep policy outlines the process to be taken to ensure we follow Public Health Guidance by the Lullaby Trust on ‘Safer sleep for babies’ to minimise the risk of ‘Sudden Infant Death Syndrome’ (SIDS).
Safe Sleep
The Public Health Guidance by the Lullaby Trust sets out the safe sleep practice to follow to minimise the risk of SIDS.
Rising Two Room
- Children under two will have access to a standard travel cot which will be located in the Rising Two room.
- Children will have suitable individual bed linen (Cot sheet and breathable blanket) that is stored in a named bed bag and washed weekly.
- Blankets will be placed under the child’s shoulders (heads should be uncovered)
- Children will be laid on their back to sleep to reduce the risk of SIDS (never on their front) and are placed in a ‘feet to foot’ position (feet should be near the foot of the cot) When the child can roll from front to back by themselves it is safe to leave them to find their own sleep position.
- The temperature of the room will be kept moderate at 16-20 degrees.
- A member of staff is always present either in the room or adjoining room when children are sleeping.
- We aim to follow the sleep routine set out by parent/Carers in the child’s ‘All about me’ including the use of comforters, however if a child is visibly tired, we will use staff knowledge to decide when the best time for the child to sleep is and act accordingly, we aim to not wake a child if they are still sleeping.
- Children are checked every 10 minutes, and this is recorded using ladybirds ‘Sleep Check Chart’ (see Appendix 1).
Over Twos
- Children over the age of Two are offered a sleep mat in a quiet area of the room, or a cosy quiet area for the child to rest if they become tired.
- They will have suitable clean bedding.
