Policy statement
At Ladybird Pre-School Nursery, staff members will administer first aid for adults and children with minor injuries or, in the event of serious incidents, whilst awaiting medical assistance.
All staff are required to be trained in paediatric first aid (PFA) within 3 months of starting at the setting and to maintain this qualification by attending appropriate and timely ongoing refresher training every three years. There is always more than one member of staff trained in PFA on site at all times, on outings and during children eating times. Staff PFA certifications are displayed and made available for parents/carers to see in the Nursery foyer.
Procedure
At the time of a child’s admission to the Nursery, parents/carers written permission for emergency medical advice or treatment is sought. Parents/carers sign and date a consent form at registration giving permission for their child to receive emergency medical treatment and for their child to be taken to hospital should a qualified medical practitioner deem this necessary. In the event of Hospitalisation, the child will be escorted by a member of staff until the parent/carer arrives.
An accident or incident form will be completed where any first aid is administered and the
parents/carers will be asked to read and counter sign this note on collecting their child. A copy of this form will be given to the parent/carer.
The record should be readily accessible, and details recorded should include:
- date, time and place of incident
- name of injured or ill person
- details of the injury or illness
- details of what first aid was given
- what happened immediately after the incident (for example, went home, went back to class, went to hospital)
- name and signature of first aider or person dealing with the incident and name and signature of a witness to the incident.
First Aid Boxes
A designated staff member will be responsible for checking the first aid boxes. The designated staff member is Kate Daniels (Deputy Manager).
First aid boxes are easily accessible to adults and are kept out of the reach of children.
They are checked fortnightly to ensure all contents are present, in date and packaging is undamaged.
The first aid boxes contain the following items:
- First Aid booklet
- 3 pairs of disposable gloves
- 20 assorted waterproof plasters
- 2 Sterile eye pads
- 4 Triangular bandages
- 6 HSE medium dressing 12x12cm
- 2 HSE large dressing 18x18cm
- 6 Safety pins
- 10 Individually wrapped antiseptic wipes
- 1 Re-breath resuscitation device
- 1 Microporous tape 1.25cmx10cm
- 1 Sterile finger dressing 3.5×3.5cm
- First aid scissors
- Eye wash
- Tweezers
- Foil blankets (adult and child)
- Forehead thermometer
- Instant cold pack
- 1 Disposable apron
We hold a regulated Life Vac (Non-invasive Airway clearance device) on site, situated in the kitchen to aid in the case of choking. This will be only used as a last resort after the first aider has administered the first two steps of 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts with no prevail. Permission to use this as a last resort will be gained from parents/carers during the admission process alongside the medical emergency treatment permission.
